Bego Antón is interested in exploring the universe that exists at the boundaries of fantasy and reality. Herwork dissects human behaviour and reflects on our psychological and moral relationship with thenatural world. She often calls herself a treasure-seeker, exploring the most remote corners of the planetand sharing them with the public through her photography. In this series everything exists, everything is true, and the earth is only a little dust under our feet. In Iceland, children are instructed never to throw stones because an errant rock might hit an elf.

The earth is only a little dust under our feet There are elves in Iceland. Also fairies, unicorns, huldufolk, trolls, beach dwarfs, water sprites, mountain spirits and ghosts. Icelanders don’t throw stones in the air, for fear of hitting one of these mysterious beings. The don’t jump on stones, in case a huldufolk might be living inside. And someone once told me,’if the president claimed he didn’t believe in these magical creatures, he would never be re-elected’. I travelled from north to south and from east to west of the island, searching for places where the magical beings live. Mostly I was looking for the people who have the ability to see them, asking in every gas station, library, grocery store or hotel if there was someone in the area who could communicate with the Beings of the Earth. If there is a place to believe in magic, Iceland must be that place.
Her work has been published in the Lens Blog of the New York Times, National Geographic, Esquire, Le Monde, CNN Photos, and The British Journal of Photography, among many others. She has exhibited both nationally and internationally at FotoWeek DC, the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Canal Isabel II and in New York, Switzerland, Germany and Iceland.
She was chosen to participate in the Joop Swart Masterclass of the World Press Photo in 2014 and received the revelation prize for PHotoEspaña in 2017. She studied journalism and specialised in documentary photography in Barcelona.
