Anokhina’s flowers call for close attention. Are they simply snapshots of flora, or are they something else? Historically, photography has served as an instrument to help us organize and categorize scientific knowledge. It was a way of applying rigour to the endless chaos of beauty in the world. However, Ekaterina Anokhina’s work suggests a break in this pursuit of perfection. Far from being an image of the untouchable ideal of nature, Anokhina’s flowers break, they tear apart, there is a mystical darkness about them. The flower serves as an image for the human body, with all its imperfections.
